“Sail Training” is considered one of the most efficient forms of leadership training all across the globe. What is less well understood is that sail training is considered excellent career training for individuals. Sail trainees are exposed to skills and career options they may never have known about. The marine industries pay high wages with excellent benefits and need a constant supply of new workers to keep the world's most efficient transportation system working.  And employers love hiring sail trainees. Also the U.S. Coast Guard considers sail training a key to their officer development programs which is why they operate the tall ship USCG Barque Eagle.

“If you want to be a really good officer on a ship, get some tall ship experience.”
— Capt. John G. Peterlin, Texas A&M Maritime Transportation Faculty

Career options are many and varied but include the recreational boating industries, the commercial maritime transportation industries, the passenger transportation business, shipbuilding and construction industries and the thousands of allied supply industries that keep things moving. All this is not to mention the need for professional sailing educators and vessel operations people. We love the sailing ships but it is our people that make our sailing lives truly special.

Employers and marine trade schools should feel free to contact Sailing Ships Maine to list job and training opportunities and advertise their programs at: info@sailingshipsmaine.org.

Our sail training graduates should contact us with their interests regarding careers.

Below is an example of one such career and educational opportunity, the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine. Several of our graduates have applied and been accepted at the academy. Congratulations to them!

As an example of the career opportunities that are open to our sail training graduates and other Maine Maritime Academy students, below is a list of the companies from around the world who send recruiters to Castine, Maine for their annual career fair.
