Richard Olson

 
 

Richard is a founding board member and serves as board secretary and legal advisor. Richard was born in Biddeford, Maine and grew up in Portland. After graduating from New York University, he joined the United States Navy and spent four years at sea as both a deck and engineering officer. Richard continued his service as a Naval reservist while he attended Harvard Law School. Richard returned to his home town after practicing law in Boston.

Richard’s sailing experience began after returning to Maine about a decade after he finally realized that he no longer had a legal duty to stand mid-watches as part of his job. Since then, Richard has owed an O’Day Daysailor and is currently co-owner of an Irwin 28.

Richard believes that one of the best places to learn about math, science, geography—and people, is at sea.

Sailing Ships Maine creates life-changing opportunities for teens of all abilities and income levels so that they may discover the ocean environment and expand leadership skills while being encouraged to consider further maritime training.  Through public events, we support the marine economy, provide access to the ocean and traditional sailing ships and preserve our maritime heritage.
